ABOUT

Mick Hutson approached photography the way others approach storytelling—with instinct, intensity, and an uncanny ability to catch the pulse of the moment. Born in the North-East of England and raised in Aberdeen, he spent his early adulthood working the North Sea rigs before discovering that his real drive lay not offshore, but behind a camera.

After formal training and a formative apprenticeship with renowned jazz photographer David Redfern, Mick’s talent found its audience quickly. A striking image of Grace Jones published in The Sun opened the door to a major commission for Select magazine, sending him on the road with U2 and firmly establishing his place in music photography.

Across several decades, Mick became one of the most recognisable contributors to the rock press. His photographs appeared on more than 80 Metal Hammer covers and were regularly featured in Classic Rock, Q, Mojo, Select, Guitar World amongst many other titles. From legends like AC/DC to ZZ Top, he captured artists at their most electrifying and unguarded.

Mick's believe was that the best photographs come from a shared spark between photographer and subject, not simply from technical mastery. 'A photograph isn't taken - it's given to you'.

Besides music photography he also took a keen interest in travel and documentary work, exploring complex stories in post-conflict regions. His assignments took him from Rwanda, where he met former child soldiers, to remote Afghan mountain passes—experiences that profoundly deepened his artistic sensibility.

Known for his generosity and humour Mick left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with. His originality and unexpected perspective he brought to every frame was undoubtedly his trademark.
